Cochrane Aggregates and the Community

LaunchPad Bike Track

Cochrane Aggregates is excited to announce, through their  collaboration with Bike Cochrane, the Launchpad Bike Park has been completed. Investments in grading, drainage and other track improvements should increase the number of days in a year that it’s accessible to the community’s children.

The Bike Track was completed earlier this month and has already been put to good use by Cochrane’s young residents. Heidelberg Materials is honored to have been part of this project, and is excited to engage with the community for the grand unveiling. We look forward to working with our industry partners to enhance the quality of life that we all enjoy in Cochrane. The work that was done here was a great example of how working together can bring a smile to the faces of a lot of people.

We hope you can make it. Look forward to seeing you there!

Local and Regional Value

Aggregate is a scarce, non-renewable resource found in specific locations. Calgary and Rocky View County have local, high-quality supplies of gravel, but they are depleting and large deposits for future supply are limited.

Demand for aggregate is directly related to population, meaning the higher the population, the higher the demand for aggregate. The Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB) most recent regional population forecasts and results show that the population is expected to reach 3 million by the year 2076, almost doubling the current population over 58 years. Each Albertan uses 10 to 15 tonnes of aggregate per year.

Cochrane Aggregates is responsibly extracting a scarce resource ahead of future planned development. Material sourced from Cochrane Aggregates will be used to support the Integrated End Land Use plans for the Cochrane community. Future residential development plans at the Cochrane pit will be supported through the temporary extraction activities.

On average, a single house requires 50 cubic meters of ready-mix concrete or 100 tonnes of aggregate. A school typically uses 5,000 m3 or 10,000 tonnes of concrete plus another 10,000 tonnes for parking lots. Hospitals typically require 30,000 m3 concrete or 60,000 tonnes plus parking.

Cochrane has grown by 17,000 people between 2013 and 2023, and is projected to have a population of 66,000 to 86,500 by 2047. Thus, aggregate and concrete material for the new communities and residential development is expected to exponentially increase over the next 20 years.
